The Unfinished Places

A partially formed, fog-covered river winding through a forest or meadow. Mist rises from the water, softening the edges of trees and hills. The light of early morning gently illuminates the scene, hinting at growth and potential. Some areas of the land appear incompleteโ€”bare earth, scattered stones, or young, sparse vegetationโ€”symbolizing things still taking shape.

God at Work in the Beginning

Genesis 1:2 โ€“ “The earth was formless and emptyโ€ฆ and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”

God spoke the earth into being, yet what He created at first was unfinished.

That cuts across how we often think God works. We expect instant completionโ€”light without darkness, order without process. But incompleteness wasnโ€™t a mistake. It was part of Godโ€™s design.

God allowed us to see the beginning. Before form, before fullness, before beauty, the Spirit of God was already present. Scripture doesnโ€™t rush past the unfinished moment. It pauses long enough for us to notice that God was there, even when creation had no clear shape.

Trusting the Process

Incompleteness is part of Godโ€™s process.

I believe God let us peek into His creative work because we all live there. We all have areas of our lives that are incomplete, unresolved, or still taking shape. And just like in Genesis, that incompleteness doesnโ€™t mean God is absentโ€”it means Heโ€™s at work.

Godโ€™s work in our lives is a process that goes through stages of development toward His intended design. If something in your life feels unfinished, donโ€™t assume God is not involved. His presence hovers over the unfinished placesโ€”not as absence, but as active preparation. At just the right moment, He speaks, and what was formless begins to take shape.

God is not intimidated by what is still becoming.

He works there.
